timeline

- late 17th century: Bantu family’s living in small groups

- expansion to the southern region of Africa

- 19th century: rising of the Zulu king Shaka

- brutal expansion of Zulu with new weapons and tactics

 

 

- 1819: victory Zulu over Ndwandwe

 

- 1824: Zululand: 20.000 km², 250.000 inhabitants, 20.000 warriors

- Mfecane: “The crushing” (tribes adopting the Zulu techniques and      weapons which leads to a period of massive brutality and death )

 

- 1828: murder of Shaka -> new king: Shakas half-brother Dingane

 

- relaxation of military-laws but new conflict: immigrants

 

 

- 16.12.1838: Battle of Bloody River
- dismissal of king Dingane
-> new king: Mpande, his brother

 

- Zulu closing contract to Boers so Zululand is restricted

​

- the British feel effected because of their concessions with the Zulu
-> 1842: battle, Boers losing

 

​

- 1872: Mpande dies, new king: his second son Cetshwayo

 

- 1879: Anglo-Zulu-War; Zulu lose final battle

            Zululand disintegrate

 

- 1884: king Cetshwayo get killed
-> new king: Dinuzulu

 

- 1887: British annexe Zululand and king is sent into exil
-> end of the Zulu empire
